    I wonder how it is that the all-powerful god tolerates any opposition at all. How can Satan be god’s adversary and do anything that was not god’s will. God could unmake Satan with a thought, yet … I don’t think this is an example of god working in mysterious ways, I think this is god working in cahoots with the enemy! Down with Quislings!

    I find it amusing that Abrahamists claim their Iron Age, Middle Eastern, tribal god is the creator of a universe with hundreds of billions of galaxies and trillions of stars and planets and is also concerned about teenage masturbation.

    You know that the suppressed but true story makes a lot more sense. Abraham’s god is Satan, created the world, our bodies and masturbation. Now does that add up? You bet it does! And Jesus was here to save us from that shit, but unfortunately the whole thing was a little difficult to explain, and it got taken over by the Evil One’s minions in the ensuing couple centuries and that message got lost, and they’re now father and son, with slightly different ideas about things.

    arbeyu, you might find it heartening to know that some religions really do promote good sex ed. The Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ have developed a curriculum for lifespan sexuality education that explicitly contradicts panel 4 of the cartoon. (If you’re curious, see https://www.uua.org/re/owl .) As you’ve probably inferred, neither sect takes the Bible or the Koran literally, so I can only imagine what J & M would have to say about it.

    Whether a believer thinks that the creator was God or Satan, I think Neil deGrasse Tyson’s arguments against intelligent design still hold. The argument I’m recalling now is that an intelligent designer wouldn’t put an entertainment complex in the middle of a sewage system. (Oh, wait. Does that argument support the idea that Satan was the creator? 😉 )

    The contradiction of religion is that suffering is necessary, but believers want a god that is the font of all goodness. Evolution, being unrelated to human understanding of good and evil, does not have that contradiction.

    Even religious people acknowledge the contradiction. To quote Leonard Cohen in “You Want It Darker”:

    “There’s a lover in the story
    But the story’s still the same
    There’s a lullaby for suffering
    And a paradox to blame
    But it’s written in the scriptures
    And it’s not some idle claim
    You want it darker
    We kill the flame”

    The solution to the paradox is evolution.
