  1. Rrr says:

Constant rate of development and progress.
Well, that’s one way to solve a differential equation.

  2. M27Holts says:

Take out the muderous exhortations to kill non believers and the Koran becomes a pamphlet….

  3. Laripu says:

Rrr, technological progress advances exponentially. Moral progress crawls along at the pace of evolution.

That’s why greed has brought us to 40°C in the UK, and hotter in Europe.

If we’re very lucky, there will be technological solutions to climate change before the heat destroys our infrastructure and ability to advance technologically.

Otherwise, we’ll have to wait another half million years.
Evolution and geology are timeless. 🙂

  4. postdoggerel says:

    George Cantor, enchanter and
    mathematical decanter
    dogma supplanter
    and brilliant levanter
    looked upon infinity
and saw what we did not see
    not a ranter of banter
    but an hypothesis grantor

  5. Laripu says:

    Kronecker, grumpily aloof,
    trashed the diagonal proof.
    The sanity of poor Cantor
    was hurt by this rancor
and the final rhyme to the limerick is left at an exercise to the student.

  6. M27Holts says:

Georg Cantor, I vaguely remembered him from set theory, when studying maths…however I didn’t know that he was a devout Lutheran and said that his theory was fed into his mind by God. However clever he was at math, he clearly couldn’t diagnose self delusion..and anyway I asked the flying spaghetti monster about an infinity of infinities and she responded with the usual noodling philsophy which always makes me want meat balls…

  7. M27Holts says:

    Laripu…tis obvious…

So he suggested that Luther told truth…

  8. Jim Baerg says:

Laripu: “That’s why greed has brought us to 40°C in the UK, and hotter in Europe.”

    Greed or ideology?
We could have been cutting CO2 emmissions a lot by building lots of nuclear power. However the followers of the ‘nuclear is the devil’ religion have been blocking that. I think they are useful idiots for the people who get an income from selling fossil fuel & are likely quietly funded by those people. Cf: the German Chancellor who pushed for closing nuclear reactors & retired to a position in Gazprom.

I will concede that nuclear isn’t good for *all* our energy needs, but it is the best available option for a significant fraction of them.

Listen to this for the advantages of coal that lead people to use it despite the pollution from it.

Jim Baerg, maybe it’s both greed and ideology. Or ideology in service of greed.

M27Holts, I think Cantor was overly emphatic about being Christian in order to avoid persecution for having had Jewish ancestry. In Cantor’s defense, atheism was rare in those days and would not have been good for his careerv either. Look what it got him from Kronecker for “crime” of suggesting that the infinite was amenable to analysis, and that this analysis would even be useful.

I like your final rhyme. Luther was certainly one of the top 100 vilest people Europe has ever produced.

  10. Laripu says:

Damn, I forgot to put my user name again. That was me of course.

  11. postdoggerel says:

    poor Cantor, whose sanity
    was infringed by Christianity
    had the largesse to say
    in terse colloquy
    “There is no largest infinity”

“No one shall expel us from the paradise that Cantor has created.” – David Hilbert

  12. Henry ford says:

Anonymouse…. And what are the suggestions for the other 99?

Duck and sneaks away for the weekend……

  13. Henry ford says:

Should have been “ducks” but what with the rising cost of living I’m economising.

  14. Rrr says:

    Geese, man.

  15. Laripu says:

Henry Ford, you could probably easily find 50 during the years 1939 to 1945.

Probably Vlad the Impaler is up there.
    Anders Behring Breivik.
    Torquemada.
Stalin. (In the movie “The Interview” James Franco’s character says “In my country it’s pronounced Stallone.”)
… But this is tiring. And there are so many… how would one sort them?

    I’m not an anony-mouse, I’m just a forgetful Laripu. 🙂

    Rrr… geesus?

  16. Rrr says:

    Of course, Laripu!

  17. Deimos says:

If we are going for most vile (rather than evil) can I suggest Boris the animal, David Cameron the caravanner and Michael Gove. So far they have cost me two TV Sets due to TV News induced rage incidents.
Oh and Bill Gates of course.

  18. M27Holts says:

Cameron? As compared to mass murderers? I’m not his biggest fan but I think comparing him to Stalin/Hitler is a bit too much…

  19. M27Holts says:

I have a new insult…”cock-womble” I will test drive it on twitter for a month…

  20. postdoggerel says:

Lines I plagiarized from the Red Lion’s loo

    when a leave cockwomble
    shagged a stay strumpet
    their mank progeny
    turned out to be
    a wankpuffin nobsocket
    shitflute spunktrumpet.
