I’ve gotta say, they’ve painted themselves into a corner.
It’s all the word of God and the word of God is immutable. So even if the followers did want to change it, they’d be bad followers if they actually did.
    Poor buggers.

  2. Eylenn says:

A suggestion for a lazy day, Author. The exact same strip, simply changing Islam for Christianity, and moving the bubbles’ pointers. ‘Cause, really, Jesus… seriously? Read the Bible recently?

  3. M27Holts says:

Apparently. According to wishy washy hand wringing liberals. The Qu’ran has no instructions for violence it’s just one giant recipe for an Arabic flap-jack or summat. It’s all in the interpretation!

  4. Sashab says:

Agree with Eylenn – true of the Qu’ran and Muslims but equally so of the Bible and Jews and Christians

  5. PeterN says:

I would like to see a version of the holy books where content, that their followers would ban from schools in other publications, was redacted for being too violent, sexual or inciting hatred. That is not abridged, just big thick black ink. In the words of The Arrogant Worms: It would take a whole lotta work.

  6. Donn says:

The corresponding Bible stuff is old testament, though, am I right? That’s where the Muslims went wrong – Christians can effectively talk out of two sides of their mouth, since they have the old testament there in case they need an excuse for some atrocity.

  7. Okapi says:

Donn – but that’s where the fun starts. If you try and discuss the failings of the Bible a lot if Christians will disavow the OT “oh, you’re just bringing up the OT, we have a new covenant…etc etc”

Problem is – you can’t get rid of it as the whole atonement thing is predicated on the sin of Adam. They also rather like the 10 commandments, and having some scripture they can wheel out to beat up the gays.

Stand by the entirety of scripture, or bin the lot. It’s either the inerrant word of God or it isn’t.

Small persiflage of a favorite saying of my father: Pretty soon there will be left just the cover.

(actually it was in the context of an orthodox neighbour, who was very strict, and demanded same from his family, but ignored the parts that did not suit his personal whim of the day. “Another page torn out today.”)

  9. Walter says:

The so called Old Testamemt is the worst case of cultural appropriation I have ever seen.

  10. Donn says:

It was the word of God, but obviously, God changed his mind! Why not? You going to make rules for God? Or anyway, he changed his mind on the parts that we can’t get along with, he’s a more flexible being than he used to be.

  11. HelenaHandbasket says:

Author: Is this a Graeme Green reference or a regional sweet reference? Inquiring minds want to know…

  12. M27Holts says:

Is that Graham Greene the Catholic Author? Think I was forced to read one of his books at high school on the mandatory reading list of the top sets. Can’t remember much but I didn’t hate it as much as “Tess of the D’urbovilles” whichever way it’s spelt it’s a candidate for the biggest pile of shite since the Quran…

  13. Most succinct punch line ever. Bravo, Author.

WalterWalcarpet, that is an interesting article. The defenders of Turkey’s Islam believe they can bully people into believing things. What they are starting to recognize is that they get the usual lip service, people keep their mouth shut, and look to the West and deism or atheism for morality. Wonderful. It’s an awakening of sorts.

  14. Laripu says:

Darwin Harmless, then the bullies want more power and increase their bullying, until no-one dares disobey. That’s probably what you have in Iran. Given an inch they’ll make a theocracy.

Too bad, they used to be so proud of Kemal Ataturk

  15. Someone says:

Applying the mentality of the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” to a system fundamentally broken. Such is organized religion.

  16. fred grant says:

you want to read a phony book, read the book of mormon, wrote by sex pervert joe smith..they had 11 witness.s to it but u check in to them they say they never seen the gold plattes with there eyes only in a vision from there god ,,thats satan..its still a sex cult to day,,there leaders rapeing there girls on missions all around the wourld

  17. Danlantic says:

    Following on Eyelenn—

    Matthew:
10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

  18. FreeFox says:

@WalterWalcarpit and Darwin Harmless, as far as I can tell that is only true about the urban West Coast around Istanbul and Ankara. Out East things are still pretty medieval, even in the big cities. This country is currently splintering into two parts, with less and less spanning the chasm and holding things together. It is only the fact that one side is willing to use any form of deception and violence necessary to win and the other is still playing by the Marquess of Queensberry Rules that there probably won’t be a civil war but the bad guys are simply going to win and those that can afford it will get out. That article is way more optimistic than I am.

  19. Smashed it again, Author.

  20. M27Holts says:

Cardinal Pell to stand trial for historical child abuse. The man is a purveyor of lies so if he says not-guilty Then he most certainly is….

  21. Someone says:

I’ve always hated Pell. I first learned who he was 18 years ago and immediately had the impression he was a self-righteous asshole. Every story and interview I’ve seen about him since only strengthens these views, as they all display a greedy, power-hungry sociopath who couldn’t care less about who suffers in the name of God, so long as he stays rich and pampered, and the Vatican remains unaccountable.
Considering he was so quick to protect and absolve pedophile priests, I wasn’t surprised to hear accusations that he was among them.
Sincerely hope he gets thrown in the slammer where he belongs.

  22. HelenaHandbasket says:

I cant just stand here and listen to you say such horrible things abotu Cardinal Pell…
…Not while Minchin is singing them, anyway
