  1. Trevor M says:

So mo is perfectly moral, but anyone who copies him may not be?

    Impossible to follow this!

  2. Emma+Peel says:

I had a husband like that.

  3. Federico+R.+Bär says:

Dear Author, I was thinking that in the next Olympic Contest of Circular Reasoning you will not have the slightest chance to win a prize. You would not even be able to participate, because I understand that professionals are not admitted.
Sorry for you 🙂 but probably there are other championships. Greetings…

  4. Canneloni says:

Allah’s Apostle said “By Allah, if Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad stole, I would cut off her hand.”
    Bukhari Vol. 4 : No. 681.

Coming from a man who was a professional bandit and thief, that’s pretty rich!

  5. jb says:

When I was a young child I learned that the definition of “good” was “whatever God said it was.” (“So if God wanted me to kill people then killing people would be good?” “Yes, but he doesn’t want you to do that, so that means it’s bad.”) Muslims supposedly do not worship Muhammad, but their reverence for him as a role model definitely has something of the same quality.

  6. Robert+Andrews says:

What I get from Christians also is that: “You can’t question God”.

So even asking about things like the killing of ALL (not just the Pharoe’s household) of the Egyptian children during the exodus is forbidden. That gets them out of even considering what’s gong on. Or answering embarrasing things…Pretty slick..

  7. E.A. Blair says:

Even in the United States, it is possible in most states to legally marry someone who is below the age of consent (in all cases, this means a minor). In almost all of these cases, the permission of the minor’s parents (and, sometimes, the additional permission of a judge) is required*. The lowest legally defined marriageable age in a US state is 12, and six states have no legally defined minimum marriageable age.

*In Texas, a girl as young as fourteen can legally marry without her parents’ consent, provided she was previously married and is either divorced or widowed.

  8. E.A.+Blair says:

Note: My previous comment is in reference to the link to the story on Pakistan’s Council of Islamic Ideology.

  9. Chiefy says:

Thank you for that information, E.A. Blair, although it made me a bit nauseated. I have to suppose that the rights of children would be better recognized without the historical influence of bad religion.

I guess that means there may be such a thing as good religion, hypothetically.

  10. Jazzlet says:

    E.A.Blair that is shocking.
Chiefy maybe a ‘least bad’ religion woud be a better way of putting it?

  11. csjm says:

I get the same thing from christians.

  12. oake says:

Author, excellent as ever, but a pedantic point to make it perfect – in frame 2, there’s a letter missing from “shouldn’t”.

  13. David+Amies says:

Today’s cartoon is one of the best ever. Well done.
I am reminded of my handling some of the disputes that occurred when bringing up my children. “You are a bad girl and must go to your room!” “Why should I?” “Because I said so!”
Of course, that was in the bad old days before it was fashionable to negotiate with the children rather than to direct them!

  14. Federico+R.+Bär says:

+David Amies: Sure enough, I (84) was one of the many other parents giving that spontaneous explication. It reminds me of
    # a cartoon:
Girl – Why should I do that?
Mother – Because I said so. Remember I’m your mother!”
Girl – Well, I’m your daughter. And as far as I know, we graduated that same day!
And #2 of a that amusing sticker I saw somewhere, probably on a T-shirt:
Good girls go to heaven; bad girls go anywhere.
    Greetings.-

  15. Gotta love a circle, Author. Perfection. Thanks.

  17. Dr_John_the_Wipper says:

Dutch situation as also a little weird. 18 years, all is up to the would-be-couple. 16-18, need parental + judges approval. But then: any (wouls-be-)immigrant has the right for family-reunition, which is considered to include promised spouses… EVEN IF THOSE ARE under 10!!!! The process to put a legal stop to that has been started, but meets all kind of delay tactics. Political Correctness in oberdrive.

  18. Mo “Euthyphro” hammed.

  19. Dr_John_the_Wipper says:

    ehh. Typos. as=is, wouls=would, oberdrive=overdrive.

I swear I will try to improve my proof-reading.

  20. fear+crazed+american+forest says:

So -will we see all paedophiles convert to Islam to legally permit their behaviour

  21. fear+crazed+american+forest says:

Did not Mo himself state that what was permissible for him did not apply to others
as I recall it he had many wives but he would not allow his daughter to the second wife of someone

  22. Dr_John_the_Wipper says:

Yes, I forgot to mention why this is: we are officially multi-cultural, and “you gotta respect others’ culture”. In non-PC circles it it now usance to abbreviate it as multi-kul; where for non-Dutch speakers, “kul” is best translated as “utter nonsence”.

  23. Trevor+H says:

Nasser – We have some sharia influence here, but many organisations fight against it. This has been exaggerated by the likes of Mr Trump for their own ends

If the president does it, that means it isn’t illegal..

    Nice one, Mr Frost..

  25. HaggisForBrains says:

E A Blair – but you don’t need permission in Alabama if it’s your cousin, right?

  26. opposablethumbs says:

    OT Federico

Well, I’m your daughter. And as far as I know, we graduated that same day!

    Mafalda!

    On T
That Euthyphro sure gets around …

  27. Paddy says:

The surest way to never improve is to believe yourself to already be perfect.

The surest way to never improve on the past is to believe a historical figure to have been perfect. (Except maybe Leonardo da Vinci. That dude was awesome).

  28. Si says:

    Good strip.
I recall having a long chat with a Jehovah’s Witness, and after doing away with his poor arguments, I started asking him about biblical morals. He claimed the bible to be the ultimate guide, yadda yadda, so I asked him if he, as managed in the bible, would deal with his recalcitrant child by taking it out to the community to have stones thrown at it until it haemorrhaged and died. He said if god said so then it must be moral. credit in that he stuck to his erm, “principles”, but bloody hell – what religion does to people’s ethical reasoning…

  29. Dysania says:

Well, this is completely irrelevant, but I was in a mood to say something and happened to be listening to music, so here it is:

    XTC-Dear God

  30. more moral than god says:

He said if god said so then it must be moral.

one has to hope then that we never get a rapist, mass murdurer or a paedophile as a ‘prophet’ who hears ‘god’ in their head

  31. Federico+R.+Bär says:

+opposablethumbs: Mafalda, indeed! (saw your comment only last night). Joaquín Lavado must have inspired you and many other cartoonists! Many years ago, a young nephew of mine could complete immediately any of the published strips, after hearing the first two or three words. By the way, he became 50 last week, I think I’ll submit him to an exam again. :-).

  32. opposablethumbs says:

Federico – I hope this very important exam goes well! 😉
(we have a treasured copy of Toda Mafalda on the shelf, as well as Todo Boogie and 20 a~os con Inodoro Pereyra, and while I definitely wouldn’t claim to be able to complete any strip from a few words I think I could with quite a few favourites)

  33. Federico+R.+Bär says:

OT = Possible off-topic, just a last comment on Inodoro Pereyra). Almost at the same time, at a lunch last Sunday, a friend of mine couldn’t believe that I did not appreciate this strip – in spite of Fontanarrosa being a well-known humorist. So with two simultaneous recommendations I think I’ll be resuming this cartoon soon!
