I believe it’s God’s will, that I go against God’s will and think nothing of it.

Christianity in general really isn’t all that much better that Islam in terms of worshiping a god who behaves like a psychotic human king. However the Catholic Church at some point came up with the concept of invincible ignorance, which sounds bad, but is actually an interesting twist of theology that excuses those — including devout believers in other religions — whose minds are totally closed to the Truth Of The Church. It’s not a get out of jail free card — you can still go to Hell for violating “natural law”, for example by committing murder — but it does allow for the possibility that a sincere and faithful Muslim or Mormon might end up in Heaven despite their obstinate rejection of the True Faith. The Catholic heaven is not as open as that of the Unitarians or other liberal Protestants, but neither is it Members Only, so that’s an improvement.

  3. Succubus ov Satan says:

According to the opening chapters of the OT, no one ends up in either heaven or hell
because A) the first chapter lists all the items that were supposedly ‘Created’ – after which ‘god’ rested – there is no mention of Hell anywhere in that list and B) the lists state that the supposed ‘heaven’ was ‘created’ first yet humans when ‘created’ were immortal so it was not ‘created’ for humans to dwell in. The islamic afterlife in contrast is mainly for women as Mo’s bible fan fiction states that ‘Hell is full of women’ and that for every man in heaven there are 72 women – this extreme imbalance would suggest that all humans in the afterlife are either already female or are converted into women when they get there

“Invincible ignorance “. I like the sounds of that! Kind of like a psychic superpower!

  5. M27Holts says:

“Invincible Ignorance” another good prog metal title…

  6. Mous says:

A technical question about the part where he quotes yada yada .. “and for them is a great punishment”: is the punishment served concurrently as long as the veil et. al is in place or at some future date? He doesn’t specify who is responsible for the placement of the seals & veils. I suggest a Fatwa must resolve this issue.

  7. M27Holts says:

Don’t worry about it, all religious texts are arbitrary nonsense. Only Whelk whoppers worry about it….

  8. Prfesser says:

My understanding is that the “72 virgins” is a mistranslation. When those folks get to ‘heaven’ they’ll be beaten up by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Zachary Taylor, and 68 other VIRGINIANS. Woodrow Wilson will not participate but he may officiate. πŸ™‚

  9. Prfesser says:

The cartoon gives credence to the idea “Anyone who loves/fears any deity is in a toxic relationship.” I may use that thought next time the shirt-and-tie sincere-but-still-whacko pamphlet squad shows up at my door.

  10. paradoctor says:

    Prfesser:
My understanding is that “72 virgins” mistranslates “72 white raisins”, those being a symbol of purity. I imagine that if anyone suicide-bombed in expectation of 72 virgins and instead got 72 white raisins might feel let down.

My wife Swims with a woman who is Joey Witness. She is always telling my wife about how she found “The Truth” absolutely as mad as a March Hare…

  13. Son of Glenner says:

M27Holts: If your Joey lady finds “The Truth”absolutely as mad as a March Hare, she should just leave! What’s keeping her in?

  14. Son of Glenner says:

M27Holts: Could it be the fear of “Disfellowship” that’s stopping your Joey lady from leaving the “Kingdom Hall”?

  15. Donn says:

Ambiguous antecedent is what we have here, compounded by defective punctuation.

  16. M27Holts says:

Aye. My punctuation is atrocious, taking too much notice of Navier-Stokes (I used those to create storm-drain design software) and trying to.look up my English Teachers skirt…

  17. M27Holts says:

    Anyway. To clarify.
    1. Wife Jane goes Swimming three times per week.
    2. Old lady (OL) she swims with Jehovas Witness.(JW)
    3. In conversation OL says she converted from CofE as a young adult to JW religion, an event she refers to as getting “THE Truth”..
    4. Clearly the Old-Bat is as “Mad as a March Hare” as my Grandmother would have said…
