Nice work. Captures the absurdity of this perfectly.
Cartoon lampoonery is part of a long tradition of dissent and criticism…death has often been a risk. Still, it’s pathetic that such things still go on today. I’d be delighted if their ’72 virgins’ turned out to be bearded men…preferably straight! How many women’s idea of heaven is finding they are stuck with a suicidal maniac for eternity? The concept is lame on so many levels…
Does anyone know if there is anything in “official” muslim documents that commands acts of violence against someone who offends the delicate sensibilities of Mo’ the Pro’?
In Denmark mocking religion used to be second nature. Jesus and The Bible has been mocked on a regular basis for decades, and somebody even made a porno movie about the second coming of Christ. And the worst that has happened is that somebody made a fool of himself by complaining, and thus the complainee was ridiculed for a while.
Hilarious! And so right on.
It would be appropriate for the perpetrator to be found criminally insane. Only an insane person, or Nancy Graham Holm. could believe that drawing a cartoon and attacking with an axe are morally equivalent.

Author, you’ve had enough threats, so obviously a few more cartoons aren’t going to make much difference. But what about those terrible people waiting for volume 5? I’m not threatening, but it’s well overdue!
Has the other Mo, i.e. Moses, seen The Book of Genesis illustrated by R. Crumb? If so, what did he make of it? And has Nancy Graham Holm seen it? Why have Jewish fanatics not stormed US embassies everywhere? Why has President Obama not apologized to the Israelites?
Luckily Mo is only a body double. Muslims have therefore no reason to want the author killed.

The man with the axe is probably following up on Jesus’ advice to men, to be sure of heaven, to cut off their own testicles. Jesus keeps waiting for people to follow his suggestion.

Ah, but she doesn’t think they’re morally equivalent! The cartoon in her eyes required a prime ministerial apology, and was indicative of the Danes’ “deeply rooted prejudice, not against Muslims, but against religion per se”, for which the islamic reaction was to be expected. All these Muslims were guilty of, was being in “love with their faith.”
Clearly, the cartoon was a much more grievous offense than an ax-wielding assassination attempt. If the attempt had succeeded, then we can begin to entertain thoughts of equivalence…maybe.

During her last visit, my mother-in-law asked what churches were in our area. I made the off-hand comment that I didn’t know what the prevailing superstition was in this area. If she had had an axe in her hand at the time, I wouldn’t be alive today to write this.

There was a time, not so long ago, when it was very difficult for any Muslim to reach Denmark.
I would NOT want to see a conviction with any mention of insanity. Although it would amuse me to see a court essentially equate religious belief with insanity, I think a conviction for criminal insanity would set a dangerous legal precedent, amounting, almost, to ‘special privilege to commit crime due to religious belief’. I could see it opening a defense of insanity for any crime even remotely religiously motivated. I’d be happy to see a conviction carrying an extra penalty along the lines of those applied to ‘hate crimes’ as applied in some countries.
Can’t wait until the Southern Baptists or some Evangelical group starts burning witches again. Dark Ages here we come!

I agree with you, Doug. Incorporating religious belief into the insanity defence would indeed leave doors wide open.
Over the longer term, though, one of those doors could well be the popular belief that religion is insane and warrants no more respect as a belief system than my belief that my local football team is better than yours.
If there were a number of incidents that fell under that ruling, we might even find religion being made illegal, due to the tendency to promote lunatic behaviour.
All hypothetical of course. 😛
The point Nancy Graham Holmes is trying to make is that making fun of extremism exacerbates instead of cures the problem. It’s a bit like confronting an axe-wielding psychopath in broad daylight and parodying him, to try to show him how foolish he is; and expecting this to somehow make the lights go on in his dim brain and to relent – ‘hahaha, of course, i see exactly what you mean, what a silly psychopathic wanker I’ve been all along. C’mon mate let’s hit the cock-and-bull and chat up the barmaid together’.

Devil’s Advocate: Your analogy is invalid. Religion is the mechanism for getting an ordinary man to axe wielding nutter. It requires no clinical insanity. You ridicule the religion and show it to be foolish, and maybe a) People won’t get sucked in to it so easily and therefore avoid the path to extremism and b) the apologists won’t get away with claiming the religion is harmless really. The cartoons are not aimed at extremists and no one would imagine an extremist would be swayed by them for the better. They still have their value and function elsewhere. For the axe wielding nutter Allah has blessed us with the Tazer. Or the MP5..

then I don’t see what difference there is if you remove the crime from the equation.

I was only suggesting insanity in the case of this perpetrator, but hadn’t thought of the possible legal problems. It would be amusing though. It’s not the belief that’s the problem, rather it’s the action resulting.

I think it’s more a legal consequence – in Canada, there was an incident where a man got on a greyhound bus and killed another passenger – cut off his head and ate some bits – while the driver and other passengers fled.
Gross story short – the murderer insisted that God told him to kill the other passenger or die himself – he had a history of mental problems – so he’s in a hospital and not prison.
Astonishingly, the hospital encouraged him to read the buybull as part of his treatment –

When Jarir reached Yemen, there was a man who used to foretell [the future] and give good omens by casting arrows of divination. Someone said to him. “The messenger of Allah’s Apostle is present here and if he should get hold of you, he would chop off your neck.” One day while he was using them (i.e. arrows of divination), Jarir stopped there and said to him, “Break them (i.e. the arrows) and testify that None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, or else I will chop off your neck.” So the man broke those arrows and testified that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah. Then Jarir sent a man called Abu Artata from the tribe of Ahmas to the Prophet to convey the good news (of destroying Dhu-l-Khalasa). So when the messenger reached the Prophet, he said, “O Allah’s Apostle! I concur; like it or not, the Bible is part of our civilizational heritage, and is more compatible with secularism [although issues do abound] than any canonical “sacred” texts of Muhammadanism are…even supposedly “secular” Muhammadan states like Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Albania, and Bosnia-Hercegovina are descending the abyss of Muhammadan Totalitarianism, Imperialism and Supremacism…
