Dick M. - The sandmen are located on Tatooine, not in Saudi Arabia; however, I do believe that Lucas did film some of the Tatooine shots in Saudi Arabia, so his extras may have been acutal sandmen that came out for a chance to be famous.
That would explain why the sandmen were so hostile and demented - they were actually Wahhabis.
Incidentally a friend of mine has a theory that the level of a religion’s misanthropy is directly related to the amount of sand sitting in the believers’ underwear.
Much discomfort = much anger.
Now that you mention it, the flower does seem like a contrasty little thing, doesn’t it? Surely it must have some significance, but I can’t fathom the artist’s intent here. Maybe he had an urge to fill some excess time and space.
I had a surfer friend once that said he thought the arabs were always so pissed off because they had the biggest beach in the world with no real usable surf. He thought that if they could use all that beach the way it was intended to be used, they’d all have their heads right and the fighting would stop.

At long last, thanks to improved education and new media attitudes, multi-cultural awareness is beginning to grow in the minds of our children.

Of course, in Saudi Arabia, a snowman of any description would be, per se, idolatry.
This must be why you never see snowmen in Saudi Arabia.

Maybe they have sandmen there instead of snowmen?

Not wanting to derail this excellent line of thought, but I think the Tattooine scenes were actually filmed around Morocco. But I could be wrong.
However, I’m all over the sand in the pants theory - that could explain an awful lot.

Actually all the stuff with sandpeople in all the Star Wars films were filmed in Tunisia.

Maybe in the next cartoon Jesus could check Mo’s pants for sand.

I wonder what kind of flower is that…

I think the flower is there to reinforce the idea of ‘unseasonal snow’.
The Author has become my personal God. Whoever depicts Him or utters His name shall suffer my great vengeance and furious anger!

Notice that the cat has already started to nibble on the flower.
March 27th, 2008 at 9:43 am
There’s a cat?
March 27th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
Of course.
March 28th, 2008 at 11:25 am
So if I draw a stick figure and scribble ‘author’ under it - will that merit the great vengeance and furious anger? Just checking.

Hey, perhaps the flower is just there as a space saver for the beer tap?
Anyway, what would happen if Mo got a closer look at the snowman and found that the kids had given him a bris to explain away the shrinkage……..
And then they renamed him Snoman Mo-ische?

You know, you’re right. That’s what I meant to say, Tunisia.
*cough*
