Another classic. Interesting how groups like to claim victimhood. I actually get tired of atheists making the same complaint. We’re lucky to live in a world, a society, and a time when we don’t get burned at the stake or stoned for denying the sky faerie. Now if an avowed atheist could just get elected president of the Untied States, that would be progress.

Just remember though, it was liberals — such as yourself (?) — who invented this competition, as a side effect of their efforts to advance the interests of their own preferred victim groups (blacks, women, LGBTs, etc.). Conservatives who do this are simply copying a successful liberal tactic.
JB, I’d trace it a little further back than that. Martyrdom has been a mainstay of Christianity since its inception.
I’ve seen it alleged that the reason the Christians got the persecution treatment in Rome in the first place was because they couldn’t leave the other religions alone. Aggressive proselytising and knocking down others’ temples was considered very bad form. As anyone would agree, early on a Saturday morning, with JWs or Mormons knocking on the front door.
@JB: As a proud, card-carrying self-avowed victimaphile (hey, uke queer ex-con whose friends are junkies, throwaways, runaways, homeless, gypsies, orphans, and shamans from a minority even suppressed by scandianavians!) I can only say that those liberals were by and large totally right. Who if not the week, downtrodden, exploited, exiled and lost should be helped, protected, sheltered, and given affection? I don’t mind peeps calling attention to genuine need. It’s rich, fat, protected swine bemoaning the loss of their unfair priviledges that makes a farce out of it. ^_^
(I kinda like that both ideas, “God helps those who help themselves” and “The meek shall inherit/love thy neighbour, etc.” are so central to Christianity, even if it seems that all of the kindly ones stayed on one side of the Atlantic and only the cold-hearted elitists crossed over.)
