Cathing up on your work, love it, but the Ryan report on child abuse within church run institutions and the revelations of the suffering of children therein has made a grown man cry, with shame (I'm Irish), with anger, and with frustration because the individuals who moved child rapists from position to position as the stench of their acts began to afflict the local community will not be prosecuted.

A quick clarification for posterity, Fr. Ivan Payne raped several children, when as an adult one of these children approached the church to "deal with" the issue, (this is Ireland forget about prosecuting the Catholic Church through the police), he was offered money, noow curiously enough the child that was raped was vulnerable and the adult who had been raped as a child had fucked up his life to that point, so Cardinal Desmond Connell loaned Ivan Payne the money to pay off the victim of his indescretion, he was then moved out of the parish he was in to another parish where he had a minstry over children. As I write this we are expecting the release of the report of another inquiry into the coverup of abuse by senior hierarchy. it won't contain anywhere near as many media-worthy stories as those of the Ryan report, however the coruption it will uncover at the highest levels of the catholic church in Ireland will disgust people to a much greater degree. If you've bothered reading my rant this far, look up Jemmy Gunnery.

Protecting the unborn so priests and other repressed (by religion) perverts can diddle them. Sad!
Protecting the unborn so some fragile-minded sap who could find no meaning in life other than by embracing convictions proposed to him by an institution purporting to be the sole key to the gates of Heaven can come kill them in the name of these beliefs?
Good and evil? Why choose? How about human, and negotiating life (with varying degrees of success or spectacular failure for which we have to assume the consequences) within the guidelines and restrictions of reasonable and quite useful laws?
Good enough and evil enough for me.

I've seen more persuasive arguments Satan. 'Muslims rape small children, so it's ok if the Catholic church uses its state-granted position to systematically do the same, generation after generation.' Maybe I have a puritan streak, but that fails to win me over.

Remember that Iraqi woman, Samira Jassam, who had women kidnapped and raped so they could carry out suicide bombings? That al qaeda have young men raped to send them to suicide bombings? Did you know Afghan troops and police rape boys? That Islam promises handsome boys in paradise? That an Imam was charged with sexual battery on a teen boy at Tampa mosque? Where's the outrage!?

Johnie, altough it looks like it, the existence of evil in the world is not one of religion's many weak points. Why? Because both evil and religion go back to the begining of times (meaning, whe humans got smart), and religion is nothing but an atempt to explain the world, so, it explains evil.

this is the Christian argument: God gave man free will. That means man can CHOOSE to be bad. When judged by God, the bad ones are going to hell. I'm no fan of religion, but it kind of makes sense. Freedom comes with evil, all in all, all the choises in our life would sum up to one big choice: Am I good or evil? If everyone was good and ...what's the word? (when you care more about others than yourself), i would start doubting my freedom...

I don't believe any of it, but when I think of the many good reasons why Im not religious, the existence of evil isn't one of them.

I think I just lost the last bit of sympathy I had for that construct known as a loving Jesus.

He did nothing to help these children. I have no doubt many of them prayed to him for relief. How a Catholic can believe that Jesus answers prayers and has the power to make the universe anything he wants it to be after this, I cannot comprehend.

Evil priests, evil church, evil god.

Ophelia, I'd be tempted to call O-Connor an arsehole, as it doesn't involve any gender-specific slurs.
Unfortunately, genuine arseholes have a vital function, whereas clerics are about as useful as a cock-flavoured iceblock ...

It is not unreasonable to get angry about the behaviour of the leader of an institution of entrenched patriarchy, that treats women as chattels and whose wombs and the filling thereof are subjects of great concern and many rules.

Maybe Simon B. was hoping the author could show how the archbishop and his predecessors have been responsible for much of the negative freight placed on the word for a piece of human anatomy.

Or maybe in a strong burst of irony, he voiced his own attitudes of misogyny.
