"That was Hitler telling the useful idiots what they wanted to hear."

Well quite. Whatever Hitler's private beliefs were (and we'll never know), he couched his public pronouncements in the language of Christianity, knowing that this would go down well with the masses. This would not have worked had Germany not been primarily Christian. Ergo, Nazi Germany was, in general terms, a Christian nation (at least as Christian as the modern USA, anyway).

ticticboom, the right seems to have a serious problem relating to intelligence (as opposed to Bush and McSame), and charisma (dido), such as that displayed by Obama.

More irrationally, they have a real problem with logic. They believe someone's name given to them at birth has something to do with what they think throughout life. This is evident in their total freak-out at Obama's name.

More astonishingly, they have a real problem understanding the establishment clause of the First Amendment. They seem to believe freedom of religion extends only to Christians. This isn't lost on any politician. Obama MUST assure the poorly educated voting population (probably about half of all voters) that he is a Christian, while the right wing operatives pound doubt into their minds.

It all adds up to at least half this nation being scared little citizens who must have an authoritarian daddy (like their choice a god, and their choice of political leaders) to tuck them in at night and cover them with thick blankets.

Personally, I liked the scene of 200,000 Germans cheering and many waving U.S. flags. It's good to have a potential leader who is intent on bringing understanding to the world instead of bombs and death.

For all the above reasons, I think that if the Neo-cons become convinced Obama will win in November, they will first announce that he is under investigation in connection with the purchase of his home (trumped up evidence), and if that does not work, they will have him killed in late October. The Neo-cons have so fully politicized every department of government, I don't see them just letting it all be reversed.

Oscar: yeah, it looks like I threw some wood on this fire and it exploded.
But shucks--how else can we be sure that EVERYONE gets offended? I'll
have to restudy my model, Grandfather Ben, who tried so hard to learn at
least an appearance of Modesty, so as not to offend and to guarantee himself an audience.

Yes, thanks for the quotes, Toast. I think ticticboom's comments have been, well, turned to toast!

Of course, it will not do any good. You know, of course, that Hitler was a bad and nasty man and there's no way that Christians would do such nasty nazi stuff because that is, well UNchristian...therefore Hitler was an atheist and the Germans who did all that nasty killing were atheists. Everything he said and did doesn't count...I've got a couple of quotes from some book that came out after his death with some dubious quotes from his chambermaid (what better authority do you need? she was right there!)where he says some negative things about Christianity, so there...he must have been an "atheist" -- Take that!

And Hitler rounded up the atheists (= bolshevists, all atheists were bolshevists and all bolshevists were atheists in Hitler's mind) and put them in concentration camps before he started on the Jews (political prisoners first), but that just shows you how bad atheists are because they turn on themselves and have no morals!

It is a well-known fact that, when one becomes an atheist, one suddenly wakes up one morning with an irrational hatred for Jewish people and an uncontrollable urge to round them up and start killing them....

Yeah, tictoc, a lack of a belief in fairies leads to wanting to exterminate Jewish people...that explains the holocaust perfectly. Well done, you're such an insighful genius.

HEY LOOK RELIGION IS MENTIONED LET'S FIGHT

If you don't find it funny, don't come here. This is a great webcomic, but in my opinion the comment section is not really necessary since all it does is start religious arguments. I know my statement makes this post a bit ironic but I'm trying to help you. Life is better without internet fights.

None of this is really the point. Atheist nations have not used their superstitions to rally the weak and gullible to them like religious people have. At least an atheistic nation has to call it's aggression what it is, a quest for power, trade rights, etc etc etc, and can't hide behind the pointless bullshit that is retaking the holy land, someone said something mean about our prophet, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity, etc.

No one ever said that atheists were all peaceful, only that they aren't coerced by the logic that their leader talks to the sky god and has absolute divine righteousness and wisdom.

Do you think Trotsky was murdered because of his religion? What do Soviet Union, Warsaw Pact satellites, China, North Korea, Vietnam, Khmer Rouge, various Latin revolutionaries, from Castro and Che, to FARC and the Shining Path have in common??? MARXISM in their socialist or communist streaks. They invaded countries, waged wars and killed "for the common good of the people" and to "protect the achievements of Socialism from the reactionary western imperialism". To them there is but one god which is the Socialist State and Marx is its prophet, their sacred texts are Das Kapital & The Communist Manifesto, the Communist Internationals are their synods, their priesthood is The Party. Lenin, Stalin, Castro, Che are their saints and martyrs. And NAZI stands for Nationalsozialistische.

Imperial Japan's religion was Shintoism.

In Mein Kampf Hitler reveals himself as a Christian:

"And the Founder of Christianity made no secret
indeed of His estimation of the Jewish people. When He found it
necessary He drove those enemies of the human race out of the Temple of
God"

"While our European people, God be praised and thanked, are left to
become the victims of moral depravity, the pious missionary goes out to
Central Africa and establishes missionary stations for negroes"

Thanks PR.

@ticticboom

According to: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0107568.html, 68% of Germany at the beginning of the C21st is Christian. I think it's fair to assume the figure would have been even higher in the 1920s and 30s. You said -

'And as for anyone stupid enough to think atheist countries are peaceful:'

- and then listed Nazi Germany. The country was clearly predominantly Christian, and by your own admission, only a party that was at least on the face of it christian could come to power. ('[Hitler] used fear of the Communists to con people into thinking he was the defender of the faith').

The singling out of Jews as the cause of pure, Aryan Germany's woes, and their subsequent slaughter was the direct product of Christianity, and Jews as Christ-killers. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler's_religious_beliefs

'In public statements, especially at the beginning of his rule, Hitler frequently spoke positively about the Christian heritage of German culture and his belief in the "Aryan" Christ.'
...
'Hitler biographer John Toland writes of Hitler's religion and its effect: "Still a member in good standing of the Church of Rome despite detestation of its hierarchy, he carried within him its teaching that the Jew was the killer of god. The extermination, therefore, could be done without a twinge of conscience since he was merely acting as the avenging hand of god..." Professor Guenter Lewy, author of "The Catholic Church and Nazi Germany" quotes Hitler as saying that he "... regard Christianity as the foundation of our national morality and the family as the basis of our national life."'

And on the subject of paganism (still a religious system, not atheism):

'Older literature states that Hitler had no intention of instituting worship of the ancient Germanic gods in contrast to the beliefs of some other Nazi officials. In Hitler's Table Talk one can find this quote:
"It seems to me that nothing would be more foolish than to re-establish the worship of Wotan. Our old mythology ceased to be viable when Christianity implanted itself. Nothing dies unless it is moribund."'
...
'In contrast to other Nazi leaders, Hitler did not adhere to esoteric ideas, occultism, or Nazi mysticism, and even ridiculed such beliefs in private and possibly in public. Drawing on higher criticism and some branches of theologically liberal Protestantism, Hitler advocated Positive Christianity, traditional Christianity purged of everything that he found objectionable. Hitler never directed his attacks on Jesus himself, but viewed traditional Christianity as a corruption of the original ideas of Jesus, whom Hitler regarded as an Aryan opponent of the Jews.'

@toast:

That was Hitler telling the useful idiots what they wanted to hear. He used fear of the Communists to con people into thinking he was the defender of the faith, private property, and capitalism. Truth is, there's not a whole lot of difference between Hitler's actual policies and Stalin's. Anyone who thinks the SS was full of Christians understands nothing about either. They were well on their way to replacing Christianity with that Thule crap. If you think the Bible is full of shit, you've never seen what they came up with. Most of the Thule mythology was based on a fiction series about Atlantis that was popular in Germany in the 19th century.

You'll notice the majority of these quotes are from before Hitler had total control of Germany. Once he didn't need it anymore, he threw the Church under the bus, much like a certain contemporary politician has a habit of doing.

Hell, Obama just spewed a load of bullshit about being a Christian last night. A few platitudes does not a Christian make.

For the record, I don't think He Who Must Not Be Middle Named is muslim, for the same reason I don't think he's a Christian: He believes in nothing except power.

'Nazi Germany (and don’t try to claim they were Christian. Some Nazis may have been, but the party itself was not. The closest they come is a streak of neo-paganism).'

"We demand freedom for all religious confessions in the state, insofar as they do not endanger its existence or conflict with the customs and moral sentiments of the Germanic race. The party as such represents the standpoint of a positive Christianity, without owing itself to a particular confession...."
- Article 20 of the program of the German Workers' Party (later named the National Socialist German Workers' Party, NSDAP)

I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so.
- Adolf Hitler, to General Gerhard Engel, 1941

The Catholic Church should not deceive herself: if National Socialism does not succeed in defeating Bolshevism, then Church and Christianity in Europe too are finished. Bolshevism is the mortal enemy of the Church as much as of Fascism. ...Man cannot exist without belief in God. The soldier who for three and four days lies under intense bombardment needs a religious prop.
- Adolf Hitler in conversation with Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber of Bavaria, November 4, 1936

I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord's work.
- Adolf Hitler, Speech, Reichstag, 1936

We don't ask the Almighty, 'Lord, make us free!" We want to be active, to work, to work together, so that when the hour comes that we appear before the Lord we can say to him: 'Lord, you see that we have changed.' The German people is no longer a people of dishonor and shame, of self-destructiveness and cowardice. No, Lord, the German people is once more strong in spirit, strong in determination, strong in the willingness to bear every sacrifice. Lord, now bless our battle and our freedom, and therefore our German people and fatherland.
- Adolf Hitler, Prayer, May 1, 1933

May divine providence bless us with enough courage and enough determination to perceive within ourselves this holy German space.
- Adolf Hitler, Speech, March 24, 1933

And the founder of Christianity made no secret indeed of his estimation of the Jewish people. When He found it necessary, He drove those enemies of the human race out of the Temple of God; because then, as always, they used religion as a means of advancing their commercial interests. But at that time Christ was nailed to the Cross for his attitude towards the Jews; whereas our modern Christians enter into party politics and when elections are being held they debase themselves to beg for Jewish votes. They even enter into political intrigues with the atheistic Jewish parties against the interests of their own Christian nation.
- Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf, Vol. 1 Chapter 11

My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. ...Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. ...
- Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922

The fact that the Curia is now making its peace with Fascism shows that the Vatican trusts the new political realities far more than did the former liberal democracy with which it could not come to terms. ...The fact that the Catholic Church has come to an agreement with Fascist Italy ...proves beyond doubt that the Fascist world of ideas is closer to Christianity than those of Jewish liberalism or even atheistic Marxism...
- Adolf Hitler in an article in the Völkischer Beobachter, February 29, 1929, on the new Lateran Treaty between Mussolini's fascist government and the Vatican

Today Christians ... stand at the head of [this country]... I pledge that I never will tie myself to parties who want to destroy Christianity .. We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit ... We want to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the theater, and in the press - in short, we want to burn out the poison of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as a result of liberal excess during the past ... (few) years.
- Adolf Hitler, quoted in: The Speeches of Adolf Hitler, 1922-1939, Vol. 1 (London, Oxford University Press, 1942), pg. 871-872

Secular schools can never be tolerated because such schools have no religious instruction, and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith ...we need believing people.
- Adolf Hitler, April 26, 1933, speech made during negotiations leading to the Nazi-Vatican Concordant

We were convinced that the people need and require this faith. We have therefore undertaken the fight against the atheistic movement, and that not merely with a few theoretical declarations: we have stamped it out.
- Adolf Hitler, Speech in Berlin, October 24, 1933

Sorry, I seem to be suffering from prematurus Submittus this morning. The previous was one of the results of a google search for "Tranzies", posted only in answer to Wowbagger (2 above), not to be deemed a direct agreement with the quote.

Or maybe parts of it, anyway.

Cheers,

Quoted from Frank Gaffney in Jewish World Review, 21 August 2007

Sovereignty is an abstraction to which few Americans give much thought. We take it for granted, like the air we breathe or the water we drink. Yet, the essence of the most successful political experiment in history — the United States of America — is the sovereign power entrusted by the people via our Constitution to our elected, accountable representatives.

Unfortunately, such sovereignty is endangered by those who believe the world of nation-states is too disorderly for efficient global commerce and the peaceable resolution of disputes. Call them the Transnational Progressives (conservative wit John O'Sullivan coined an abbreviation he insists must be spelled Tranzies). They prefer supranational arrangements like the European Union, run by wholly unaccountable bureaucrats.

The trouble for the Tranzies is that a lot of folks who value their freedoms — notably, the American people and many who represent them in Congress — generally don't fancy such arrangements. They see them for what they are: big government on steroids, unwieldy, unchecked and unresponsive to the will of the ruled.

So it is necessary for the Tranzies to resort to extraordinary means to supplant national governments. The European Union's architects have acknowledged privately they could never have pulled it off if the publics of the Continent's various nations understood what was afoot.

@ticticboom: it's nice to see people old enough to remember Imperial Japan making full use of the internet. Although, I think most people probably would consider Shintoism a religion.

Atheists (or their countries) don't generally resort to violence because they have been offended qua atheists - they do it for reasons that the religious (or their countries) also do: politics, territory, power, just being mean &c. They just have one less reason to do it. It's not much of an improvement, I'd have to admit.

What, exactly, are "tranzies", btw? My intial guesses, vampires or cross-dressers, don't really seem to fit the context.
