Well quite. Whatever Hitler’s private beliefs were (and we’ll never know), he couched his public pronouncements in the language of Christianity, knowing that this would go down well with the masses. This would not have worked had Germany not been primarily Christian. Ergo, Nazi Germany was, in general terms, a Christian nation (at least as Christian as the modern USA, anyway).

More irrationally, they have a real problem with logic. They believe someone’s name given to them at birth has something to do with what they think throughout life. This is evident in their total freak-out at Obama’s name.

More astonishingly, they have a real problem understanding the establishment clause of the First Amendment. They seem to believe freedom of religion extends only to Christians. This isn’t lost on any politician. Obama MUST assure the poorly educated voting population (probably about half of all voters) that he is a Christian, while the right wing operatives pound doubt into their minds.

It all adds up to at least half this nation being scared little citizens who must have an authoritarian daddy (like their choice a god, and their choice of political leaders) to tuck them in at night and cover them with thick blankets.

Personally, I liked the scene of 200,000 Germans cheering and many waving U.S. flags. It’s good to have a potential leader who is intent on bringing understanding to the world instead of bombs and death.

For all the above reasons, I think that if the Neo-cons become convinced Obama will win in November, they will first announce that he is under investigation in connection with the purchase of his home (trumped up evidence), and if that does not work, they will have him killed in late October. The Neo-cons have so fully politicized every department of government, I don’t see them just letting it all be reversed.

Of course, it will not do any good. You know, of course, that Hitler was a bad and nasty man and there’s no way that Christians would do such nasty nazi stuff because that is, well UNchristian…therefore Hitler was an atheist and the Germans who did all that nasty killing were atheists. And Hitler rounded up the atheists (= bolshevists, all atheists were bolshevists and all bolshevists were atheists in Hitler’s mind) and put them in concentration camps before he started on the Jews (political prisoners first), but that just shows you how bad atheists are because they turn on themselves and have no morals!

That was Hitler telling the useful idiots what they wanted to hear. He used fear of the Communists to con people into thinking he was the defender of the faith, private property, and capitalism. Truth is, there’s not a whole lot of difference between Hitler’s actual policies and Stalin’s. Anyone who thinks the SS was full of Christians understands nothing about either. They were well on their way to replacing Christianity with that Thule crap. If you think the Bible is full of shit, you’ve never seen what they came up with. Most of the Thule mythology was based on a fiction series about Atlantis that was popular in Germany in the 19th century.

You’ll notice the majority of these quotes are from before Hitler had total control of Germany. Once he didn’t need it anymore, he threw the Church under the bus, much like a certain contemporary politician has a habit of doing.

Hell, Obama just spewed a load of bullshit about being a Christian last night. A few platitudes does not a Christian make.

Sovereignty is an abstraction to which few Americans give much thought. We take it for granted, like the air we breathe or the water we drink. Yet, the essence of the most successful political experiment in history — the United States of America — is the sovereign power entrusted by the people via our Constitution to our elected, accountable representatives.

Unfortunately, such sovereignty is endangered by those who believe the world of nation-states is too disorderly for efficient global commerce and the peaceable resolution of disputes. Call them the Transnational Progressives (conservative wit John O’Sullivan coined an abbreviation he insists must be spelled Tranzies). They prefer supranational arrangements like the European Union, run by wholly unaccountable bureaucrats.

The trouble for the Tranzies is that a lot of folks who value their freedoms — notably, the American people and many who represent them in Congress — generally don’t fancy such arrangements. They see them for what they are: big government on steroids, unwieldy, unchecked and unresponsive to the will of the ruled.

So it is necessary for the Tranzies to resort to extraordinary means to supplant national governments. The European Union’s architects have acknowledged privately they could never have pulled it off if the publics of the Continent’s various nations understood what was afoot.

Atheists (or their countries) don’t generally resort to violence because they have been offended qua atheists – they do it for reasons that the religious (or their countries) also do: politics, territory, power, just being mean &c. They just have one less reason to do it. It’s not much of an improvement, I’d have to admit.

What, exactly, are “tranzies”, btw? My intial guesses, vampires or cross-dressers, don’t really seem to fit the context.
